About this deal

Beginning publication in 1981 as a serialized story in the French magazine “Metal Hurlant” (known in Anglophone countries as “Heavy Metal”), the saga that would come to be known as “The Incal” follows the misadventures of John Difool. This character is a low level private investigator who encounters a powerful artifact known as The Luminous Incal, which pulls him into a further escalating series of events with intergalactic consequences. By the end of the primary story in 1988, Difool’s journey takes him across two galaxies and results in the reshaping of the entire universe. TBH- a feel this piece time-travels a lot better than "The Watchmen" or "Dark Knight"- it maintains a fresh, vital take on the world around it.

Russell: As I was writing the Psychoverse and the Psycho-nuns particularly, I kept telling myself, 'This is like something George R. R. Martin would write,' although maybe not as good as George R. R. Martin would do it. Why is this important? Because you don't want to read Megalex as part of the Incal. Read that one after the Incal-stuff.The “Superhero” Trademark: how the name of a genre came to be owned by DC and Marvel, and how they enforce it There are examples of such influential works that succeed so well at inspiring further works, that they get lost in the shuffle. Obscurity is the price of inspiration. “The Incal” by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius (a.k.a. Jean Giraud) is precisely this kind of work. In the introduction to the 2014 hardcover edition, acclaimed US comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis specifically urges readers to not imitate the work. Reading into the story itself, it soon becomes not too hard to see many ideas and elements that other creations have imitated. The way Animah hands Solune to the Metabaron is reminiscent of angelic apparitions and the way other messianic figures were adopted at birth, such as Moses. Animah could also be seen as an allegory of the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene (at one point Animah takes the role of a prostitute). a b c d e f g h Anthony Paletta (August 26, 2013). Things got really crazy toward the end. I'd say The Incal is more about the journey and the ideas along the way than the destination. While I enjoyed this quite a bit, I think I'll leave John DiFool's other adventures on the shelf. The poor bastard has been through enough! Nicolas Winding Refn Says He's Not Adapting 'The Incal' After All". IWatchStuff. Anticlown Media. June 24, 2016 . Retrieved October 25, 2016. Mark Russell: Well, it's daunting because it's something that I personally have a tremendous amount of respect for, and I know there's nothing people would less rather read than somebody trying to walk on eggshells around a story or around a property. Jean Giraud's (also known as Moebius) artwork and Yves Chaland's colouring from The Incal were well praised. Jodorowsky initially didn't have a script, but recounted and mimed the ideas to Moebius who sketched the scenario, recorded their conversation on tape, and they jointly altered the plot. [5] Jon Evans considered resemblance to the De Stijl school of art inspired by artists like Piet Mondrian and Vilmos Huszár. [4]The biggest, and clearest example of “The Incal” influencing a future work, is, without a doubt Luc Besson’s 1997 cult classic “The Fifth Element”. The inspiration was so clear in fact, that Mr Jodorowsky and Moebius sued for plagiarism. Although the case was lost (in part because Mr Besson had hired Moebius to do production design for the film), it was noted in the judgment that “tiny fragments” of “The Incal” had been used in the creation of “The Fifth Element”. The Incal was initially serialized in French between 1980 and 1985 in the magazine Métal Hurlant, which was published by Les Humanoïdes Associés. [1] [28] An English translation was serialized in the magazine Heavy Metal (published by National Lampoon) from 1982 to 1984. [29] [30] Concurrent with its serialization in Métal Hurlant, Les Humanoïdes Associés collected the series as six hardcover volumes: L'Incal Noir (1981), L'Incal Lumière (1982), Ce qui est en bas (1984), Ce qui est en haut (1985), La cinquième essence–Galaxie qui Songe (1988), and La cinquième essence–La planète Difool (1988). In 1988, Epic Comics (a division of Marvel Comics) published The Incal in three volumes as a part of their "Epic Graphic Novels" line, with translation by Jean-Marc Lofficier and Randy Lofficier. [25] No studio or streaming service is yet attached to the project and the Incal movie marks the first time publisher Humanoids has delved into the world of film. Humanoids executives, who note the publisher has rebuffed inquiries from Hollywood over the years, say they prefer to have Waititi develop the script before deciding on distribution. A first draft of the script is expected by the end of the year. Filmmaker/writer Jodorowsky and French artist Mœbius unveiled the Humanoids title at the end of the 1970s, seeing it go on to become the highest-selling sci-fi graphic novel in history. It serves as the foundation of the “Jodoverse,” which encompasses bestselling comic book series including The Metabarons and Megalex, and may be further explored by the company via additional films at a later date.
