About this deal

Defined by its relationship to England, Scotland's popular history is full of near-mythical figures and tragic events, her past littered with defeat, failure and thwarted ambition. This colourful history of Scotland tells those other tales, half-forgotten or misunderstood, that have been submerged by the wash of history. From Caledonia to Pictland examines the transformation of Iron Age northern Britain into a land of Christian kingdoms, long before 'Scotland' came into existence.

I picked it up in the discount bin in Bookworld on Princes St a year or two ago, but it took me a while to get round to reading it.It’s a perfect introduction to the subject: it is clear, concise and has excellent accompanying illustrations. My most charitable reading is that this is a journalist with some background in history who has a sense of humour that doesn't gel with me, who doesn't source his claims, who is writing a sort of preferred fiction rather than the factual book I was looking for, and so we part ways.

Written with the vim and accessibility that are a hallmark of the historian’s presenting style, A History of Scotland debunks myths, celebrates neglected events and provides pithy and page-turning pen portraits of the nation’s favourite figures. The successful completion of the course gives students the equivalent to Junior Honours/OU Level 3 and carries 60 SCOTCAT points. This study looks afresh at the assumption that those in the Scottish parliament who voted for the union of 1707 sold their country.
