About this deal

Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. But personally, I gobble up most artistic output for its imperfections - and a story such as this needs to err to be so human.

Yep… To be honest I did forward thru chapter 9 but for some reason I was drawn to the addiction part. Full of scintillating prose and postmodern ruminations that explore topics ranging from the hive mind flow state of US Marines bounding through the city's hostile streets to . Inspired by a fellow SAS soldier, whose father was a “committed junkie with a three-decade habit”, Timberlake decides to deliberately get himself hooked on heroin, “to touch the bottom of the abyss”. This is a dark, raw and uncompromising tale of the human condition in extremis, drawing on the many lives of Ben Timberlake: as an archaeologist, Special Forces soldier, combat medic and drug addict. Philosophy, psychology, archeology, physiology and the tortured workings of the human soul all are covered here with empathy, insight, wit and crude humour.Former infantry officer and Times correspondent Antony Loyd fled depression and drug addiction at home to the front lines of Bosnia, witnessing barbaric chaos in what was Europe’s bloodiest conflict since the Second World War.

Together, they share their uncompromising personal accounts of embracing fear and choosing to live life at the very extreme, revealing what happens when you’re taken over the edge. Rarely have I felt such a suspense and relief and got to live through things being thankful at the same time that it's just a book and I don't need to do the things myself. I bought this book because I’m interested in drugs and altered states of consciousness and the situations people take them in. Who dares to explore where angels fear to tread, who dares to dance with devils, and who dares to look unflinchingly in the mirror. The extraordinary rush of adrenaline caused by his near death experience left its mark on Timberlake, and after graduating from university and taking on a number of different jobs, he went to Iraq at the beginning of the war there, pursuing the story of a British army reservist alleged to have killed a number of Iraqi civilians.

While most books seek to coax a series of narrative threads into some sort of comforting resolution, this author grasps three concurrent 2,000 volt live wires in the same fist, grapples with their life-and-death kinetics and never lets go.

If you are looking for a story on a man who has pushed the envelope on living life on the edge, this book is for you. Less of a SAS memoir and more a telling of some genuinely gripping, funny, shocking and ( I am ashamed to say) relatable stories about fighting, addiction and a life hard lived.
